On this weekend resplendent with blossoming weeping cherries, Kurt and I traveled to GreenHouse17, an emergency shelter for women and children who have experienced intimate partner abuse. We were invited by a staff member, who wrote to us: “A crisis shelter during this situation operates a bit differently than the general population and I thought this other narrative might be of interest to you.” At GreenHouse17, we heard about the challenges all crisis shelters are facing at this time. We met women and children holding it together, despite their trauma. We spoke with staff members committed to keeping the shelter running and safe. And we photographed Delila, too, who wouldn’t stop wagging her tail.

Lexington in the Time of COVID-19 is an artwork about people practicing social distancing at a time of a deadly virus. And also offering kindness.

Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova capture photographs at the periphery of American culture, where drag queens, discarded couches, and abandoned motel signs exist.
