Rifka and Smail

Rifka and Smail fled their native country of Bosnia in the midst of a bloody war, arriving in Lexington in November 1995. They made their home here and started their own business, Rifka’s Alterations. Their daughters Alma and Selma own Sorella, Lexington’s first gelato shop. Rifka and Smail have been in house isolation since March 13.

Kurt Gohde and Kremena Todorova capture photographs at the periphery of American culture, where drag queens, discarded couches, and abandoned motel signs exist.
